High Blood Pressure is the measure of the force of blood pushing against the blood vessel walls. High Blood Pressure, also known as Hypertenstion, is dangerous because it makes the heart work harder to pump the blood out to the body, and overall contributes to the hardening of arteries, strokes, kidney disease and to heart failure.
This medication is used either alone or alongside other medications to treat high blood pressure. Lowering your blood pressure, it helps to prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Clonidine belongs to a class of drugs, called central alpha agonists that take action in the brain to lower blood pressure. It works by relaxing the blood vessels so the blood can flow at a much easier pace.
This medication comes in three different doses that are 0.1mg, 0.2mg, and 0.3mg. You dose is based on your medical background and your overall response to the treatment. If your doctor or pharmacist has given you some information in the form of a pamphlet, take the time to read up on this drug, and if you have any questions or concerns regarding this medication, please consult your doctor.
First of all peel off the backing of the patch before applying the patch to a clean, dry, and hairless are of the skin on the upper outer arm or upper chest. Press firmly down on the patch for about 10 seconds to assure it stays on. Do not apply the patch on oily, broken, or irritated skin. And avoid placing the patch to areas of the skin where it might easily ruff off. This medication is usually worn for 1 week then is replaced. Follow you doctors orders carefully. Make sure to wash your hands after handling each patch.
Remember that the dosage given to you is based on your medical condition and your response to the treatment. Use this medication regularly to receive the most benefit, and remember it is important to continue taking this medication, regardless of if you are feeling well or not.
Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor first. Putting a stop to the medication may cause you symptoms such as nervousness, agitation, shaking, and headaches. A rapid rise in blood pressure may also occur if the medication is put a stop to. And the risk is great if you have used this medication for a long period of time or have a high dosage. Therefore it is important you do not muss a dose. Speak to you doctor right away if you are unable to continue taking this medication. To prevent any risks, your doctor will likely reduce your dosage gradually.
Before taking Catapres TTS, tell your doctor if you allergic to Clonidine (including having a rash or other irritations while using Clonidine patches); or if you have any other allergies in general. Also it is best to let you doctor know of your medical history, especially if you have had any of the following; kidney disease, heart rhythm problems (such as slow/irregular heartbeat, second- or third-degree atrioventricular block).
This medication may make you feel drowsy or dizzy. When in this type of situation caused by the medication it is best to avoid alcohol, or any medicinal cannabis.
If any of these side effects occur it would be best to notify your doctor promptly; Dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, dry mouth, unusual tiredness, headache, or mild redness/itching/irritation at the application site. To relieve dry mouth you may suck on sugarless hard candy or ice chips, chew sugarless gum, and drink water or use another saliva substitute.
However, you should tell your doctor right away if you have any of these serious side effects, which include; fainting, slow/irregular heartbeat, mental/mood changes (such as irritability, depression).
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
