Timoptic XE is used to help treat high pressure inside the eye as a result of glaucoma (open-angled). High pressure inside the eye can lead to complications such as blindness. Most times, high pressure is caused by an inadequate drainage of eye fluid (open-angle glaucoma), but can also be caused by excessive fluid production, injury affecting fluid drainage, or other conditions are medications. This medication may also be used to treat high pressure caused by ocular hypertension or other eye diseases that cause high pressure in the eye.
Timoptic XE (timolol) is effective at treating high pressure of the eye because as a beta-blocker, it is able to decrease the amount of fluid in the eye.
Your doctor will tell you before prescribing you Timoptic XE (timolol) exactly how to use this medication. Follow his or her directions, they can usually be found on the prescription label if you forget.
Use one drop in the affected eye(s); do not use more than once per day. If you wear eye contacts, ensure you take the out before applying the medication. After applying the medication, wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back.
How to apply Timoptic XE
Do not use Timoptic XE (timolol)
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to timolol or if you have asthma or severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, serious heart conditions, severe heart failure, or slow heartbeats that have caused you to faint.
Do not use this product in children under the age of 2 years old.
Dose adjustment or special precautions may be required
It is important to tell your doctor if you have ever had heart disease, a stroke, a blood clot, circulation problems, breathing problems, diabetes, a thyroid disorder, narrow-angle glaucoma, allergies, or a muscle disorder such as myasthenia gravis.
Risks
It is not known if this medication will harm an unborn baby; speak with your doctor about the risks and benefits of using this medication when pregnant.
This drug can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Do not breast feed while using this medication until you have discussed the risks and benefits with your doctor.
Common side effects of Timoptic XE (timolol) may include:
burning or stinging in your eye; dry eyes, itching; feeling like something is in your eye; red or puffy eyelids; or headache.
The above side effects should not alarm you.
Serious side effects of Timoptic XE (timolol) may include:
severe stinging or burning after using the eye drops: eye swelling, redness, severe discomfort, crusting or drainage (may be signs of infection); or blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights.
If you have any of the above side effects or signs of complications, contact your doctor right away.
