Xiidra is a ophthalmic solution, administered into the eyes, consisting of a lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) antagonist called lifitegrast. We carry the brand choice of this medication in 5%.
Xiidra is prescribed to help treat dry eye disease. This is a condition that occurs when your tear ducts are not providing adequate lubrication for your eyes, usually either because you don’t produce enough tears or produce poor-quality tears. Dry eyes feel uncomfortable, usually a stinging or burning sensation in your eyes; you may also have stringy mucus in or around your eyes, eye redness, or a sensation of having something in your eye. Dry eyes can be caused by decreased tear production, as mentioned previously, but it can also be caused by increased evaporation. Increased evaporation can include wind, smoke, or dry air, blinking less often (like when your reading or doing other activities that require concentration), or eyelid problems.
Xiidra (lifitegrast) is effective at treating dry eye disease because it is able to block a certain protein on the surface of cells in your body. This protein is typically the cause of not being able to produce healthy tears or not being able to produce any tears at all.
Only take this medication the way that your doctor has directed you too. Taking the incorrect dose can lead to unwanted side effects, ineffectiveness, or adverse interactions; avoid taking more or less of a dose than recommended. This medication should be protected from heat, moisture, and light to avoid nullifying the medication; keep the lid tightly closed when not in use. Wash your hands and remove any contact lens before applying the drops.
Commonly, this medication is given as one drop in each eye twice per day, usually every 12 hours.
